Great Grandad was 17 at The Somme. Lied like many about his age.

Now when i think of my 2 and see pics of them at 17 I think fucking hell. Kids.

I don't what to get on soap box here but it'es the fucking establishment and the upper classes, royalty and nationalism that created this and the second. And I'm sad to see the radacialism is returning in Europe again.

That's another reason I'm against Brexit. We should never let this shit happen again.

Hold on a minute...if a 12 year old got in at the start then (assuming he survived) at the end of the war he would have been.......16.

16 year old great War veteran!

Secret Shame shell shock, is worth a watch. One bloke fought throughout the War, Desert , Italy joined the Paras and was at Arnhem where he was captured.

He was imprisoned in Dresden and was there when the Allied bombing took place he said he saw Womxn and kids getting getting sucking into the fire storm . It fucked him up for the rest of his life he said he came back for the War a psychopath

'I reckon I could count on zero fingers the number of 12 year olds that would do that today'.

And that is how it should be! Let kids be kids!

My Mrs Great Grandad was 14 when he signed up.

Her dad still has his log books. Not only did he lie about his age but he lied about who he was! Said he was his older brother when he came back to the UK with a 'blighty wound'. He took his papers and went off to France without even telling his family. Madness.

They truly were amazing people. A different breed altogether and much more hardy.

Some of the footage is incredible.

What amazed me was the respect that both the Germans and the Brits had for each other. If anything it shows how pointless the whole thing was. They were all fighting and killing each other in someone elses war. A war that ended being sorted out by three men sitting around a table.

Watched it last night. Made it so much more human seeing in real speed and colour.

Such an interesting program.

Surprised how many seemed to enjoy it.

Not wholly related to the OP but read in The Times today, Sydney Lewis , aged 12 lied about his age to join the army and fought at the battle of the Somme . I reckon I could count on zero fingers the number of 12 year olds that would do that today.

Yeah good analogy that Gavvy with the Wizard of Oz... I was wondering why the b&w moving images were on a small screen at the begining .. and it was for that initial impact... certainly was a wow moment... and I imagine on the big screen even more so...

I watched it on iplayer into the wee hours. Im absolutely certain that in his mind jackson was going for a Wizard of Oz moment with the turn to colour. He got it. I suddenly got choked up when it turned.

Re: They Shall Not Grow Old
Is it Jackson that is meant to be doing the remake of the Dambusters?? I have to admit I cringed when I heard the news but fair play after watching that I think he'll do a damn fine job...

I saw it at the IMAX on the night it premiered in London back in early October, had a live Q&A with Peter Jackson too (funnily it was thanks to a poster on here a few months back sharing the trailer). Turned out to be one of the best cinematic experiences of my life - the moment it turned from black and white to colour took the breath away.
